Web Cam Status
As I notice changes to the camera status at Maui Mana Kai, I will post updates here.
seems like there was a power outage yesterday and the camera booted up before the router. Hence camera control is down right now until AAOceanfront reboots.
Regarding the beach. Now that the large south swells have subsided, beach rebuilding is going full steam. Looks like about ten feet has been added over the past month. You can gauge the depth of the beach by looking for the eye hook in the concrete piling of the old pier. I once saw it covered with sand. Right now it is about 3 feet above the water.
The post. It is not a post. It is the left side of the sliding glass door. Occasionally a guest does not slide open the door all the way an it blocks the view to the right. They are checking out today, June 5th so when the maids arrive the door will return to its rightfull place.
We saw your website prior to our visit to Maui in January. Sorry, we did not stay in your wonderfull condo. We were there when the beaches left to be washed. What a difference. It is good that the beach is returning. It was so sad to see all that beach gone. Love your Camera, reminds us of a great holiday. RA.
Camera was power cycled yesterday but I still can not ping it. Road Runner is reporting DNS issues. I am checking with them to see if there are other network problems in Maui.
Camera is back up. Problem was a loose power supply that came out of the socket. In early September I will be bolting it down somehow AND putting in a UPS to try to eliminate problems when the power goes out.
The camera seems to be having trouble on it's "UP" control, providing us with a lot of great shots of the table on the lanai, but limiting everything else to a far focus. Most shot locations are inaccessible. I hope the camera gets a fix so I can get mine.
Fixed. Some how the camera got moved on its mount. I fixed the "beach" present and left the programming open so if someone(s) else wants to reset them...thanks for the help!
Same problem as a couple of days ago: The camera seems to be having trouble on it's "UP" control, providing us with a lot of great shots of the table on the lanai, but limiting everything else to a far focus. Most shot locations are inaccessible. Thanks for you prompt attention last time. It was great to look around yesterday.
Fixed. Just so you know, the camera is mounted on a somewhat flexible angle bracket and camera mount. I thought it was fairly secured but somehow, perhaps when the maid cleans, the mount gets bumped. Meanwhile, I can control remotely the extent of the pan and tilt so that is how I fixed the problem. Nevertheless, I have to come up with a more secure way of mounting the camera. Are their any volunteers to go there and hold it all the time?
Camera is now mounted on an industrial strength bracket and a swarm of volenteers have offered to check it often. So future views should be straight and level at http://www.mauimanakai.com/webcam.htm
February 9,05 I guess your current guests have decided to put a bag over the camera. :-( I enjoy watching the surf and was hoping to see some whales. Thank you for letting me enjoy Maui through your webcam. Now if only that palm blocking Molokini would just grow a little faster. Kevin Lafayette,Ca.
Web cam seems to be uncovered at htt://www.mauimanakai.com/webcam.htm at this time. I don't know why my guests decided to cover it but I asked my property manager to please explain to them that the "pan" is limited to just the outside and can be limited to NOT being able to see the lanai...if they want. I let it see the lanai because everybody for the past 4 years wants to sit there and wave at their friends/family back home! In any case, these folks will be moving out on Feb 12th.
Meanwhile, I got about 2 dozen emails on the subject from alert viewers. Some are pretty interesting and are repeated below. One fact which is a surprise is that 95% of the emails are from women. This suggests that the demographic of viewers is quite different than many supposed in the great "To Zoom or Not to Zoom...that is the Question" companion blog.
Hi David, I'm just a mainlander in Big Pine Ca. and visit Kihei every day. Have snorkeled Molokini, Olowalu, Black Rock, etc. LOVE your webcam. I drink my coffee and look at Kahoolawi and Molokini almost every morning. (also Haleakala) Right now there is a sheet, or tarp, or some kind of laundry over the cam. If you could fix that, I would show you all the fishing spots in the Owens Valley the tourists don't know about. Appreciate any help. Jill RN
that we’re looking at a bag over the camera.
enjoy and miss webcam view!
Geline
Hey David,
Miss the view for the last two days. Must be doing an upgrade? It brings me down to earth especially on a hectic day! Hope it is back up soon!
Thanks again for making this available. I just can't wait for April!
Have a good weekend!
Jim
I usually look at your webcam several times a day but I haven’t been able to the last few days. It seems like whoever is staying in that suite has put a bag or something over the camera.
Very sad,
Kelly
Hi Dave We arrive in Maui next week, so I wanted to check out the beach on the web cam but somethings infront of the camera. Look like a wind surfer's sail.
Roberta
David,
I hope this is just a temporary problem! I enjoy having the opportunity to look at my favorite place on earth on a daily basis.
Pam
Hello, What has happened to your Web Camera??
I live in Canada (land of ice and snow through the winter) and totally enjoy viewing your web cam as an escape from the winter outside my doors!!
It looks like there is a sheet or a towel draped over the lens ....................
Will it be fixed??
Cheers,
Dear Dave,
I have been enjoying your webcam until just recently, when it has not been available - right now there is no image at all. Please let me know if this is a short-term problem or not.
Thanks!
Carolyn (a Californian wishing she were in Maui - I'll be there this summer)
Somebody placed a paper or towel over the camera. Can you make them take it down, please? Thank you. David
My mother is vacationing at the beautiful Mana kai. I went to look up the resort to see where she was staying and found the webcam, very cool. I am in Traverse city, Michigan USA. I called her on her cell phone and told her that I was watching her, so she better behave. She could not believe it. She now waves to me every day. Thanks, Lynn
I recieved your web cam by e-mail from a friend i convienced to move from Washington State to Maui.I am from Kehei and Pukalani,I can not tell you how wonderful it is to see my old stompin grounds via your cam.I am taken back to so many fantastic memories just watching while i sit here in gloomy Washington state. Thank you for my vacation a day... Nancy
04/03/05 Your full motion control page doesn't seem to be working. Have you changed the camera to have only one view and not be able to be controlled by outsiders?
It's still nice to see the weather and a few waves.
Seems like the FTP is still working since the stills are changing every thirty seconds. The way this works is the camera has a built in FTP server which I have programmed to send a still image to my web site (http://www.mauimanakai.com/webcam.htm) every 30 seconds. The motion part of the camera is using the camera's internal HTTP or web server. That part of the camera's software reports to a Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) run by Panasonic in Japan. Sometimes that server fails and hence we can't access the motion part of the camera.
In other words, the camera reads its own IP address gained from the Linksys router which in turn gets its IP address from the cable modem. Since the cable modem can change IP addresses dynamically, this system updates the DDNS server which in turn resolves the mauimanakia.viewnetcam.com to the IP address of the camera. But for some reason the DDNS is not resolving to the camera. I am not sure if it is a problem with the DDNS server, the router, or the camera. I am hoping to have someone go into the condo tomorrow when my guests check out, power cycle the camera and then call me to help troubleshoot. Then the pan, tilt and zoom controls will be returned to service.
Thanks for letting me know about this since I don’t always sign-on.
Hi David, Thank you for allowing those of us who are not currently enjoying the warm trade winds of Hawaii a tiny slice of heaven every day with your Webcam! Northern California Dreamer
hi david nice try ,but your web cam sucks.no motion movies and no pic change every 30 sec. would be nice if it woud work.i know you try but pls try harder. aloha
reto and paco, maybe you didn't look at the full motion page. Today it seems to be changing every 4 or 5 seconds. Beautiful watching the waves. Nice work, David. 08/11/05
Love the cam, visit it almost daily, wishing I was back. Over the past couple days, the same image is showing, is the camera down? If so, when will it be back up?
Hi from MN! The cam is not working ? I was hoping to view some sun today. We are planning a trip again soon- we have stayed at the Mana Kai and cannot see ourselves staying anywhere else! Love your WebCam!
We enjoy getting on this site to watch what is happening on the beach and, although, those 2 young ladies are pretty, we would like to see other things than just the camera focused on them. Thank you.
What's with all the whining about the camera being pointed at girls? If you were standing there you would see the same thing. Some people need to get a life
Web cam went down Weds, Sept 27th. Reboots of the Roadrunner cable modem, router and camera has not been sucessful. Weds or Thursday I will follow RR suggestion and swap out the cable modem.
I agreed to switch to the hospitality account from Roadrunner which I found requires a person to click on a "accept terms" web page prior to connecting to the Internet. This happened on Weds Sept 27th.
Unfortunately the webcam run does not have that ability to see a web page and click on a link.
So I switched back to the Residential Roadrunner account, but the Hospitality account servers would not release the modem.
Roadrunner technical support will be sending a technician out tomorrow to swap the modem which will eliminate the problem and we will all be will see the beach from the web cam again!
Roadrunner went out as promised but did not follow directions to get key to unit and swap modems. Instead they ask us to reboot current modem. Am trying to get that done to see if it fixes problem and then...see next post.
Earthquake off Kona coast of Big Island about 50 miles south of Mana Kai. No damage in 215 but reports of some TVs falling in higher units. Guest rebooted modem so we can see wave action but Roadrunner is down as is power in the Mana Kai and possible elsewhere on the island. When power is restored, camera might be able to connect to the internet and we can see again.
I asked my guest several days ago to please not do this. I explained that via software control I can ensure that on one can see anyone on the lanai. In other words, I can control the limits to pan/tilt and zoom so folks on the lanai can not be seen. But they seem to be uncomfortable and hence the hat. In anycase, they and hopefully the hat will be leaving Nov 22nd.
I'm here in California where it's been nothing but crappy cloudy whether all week, unfortunately the cam has also been covered for a while.. I need some sun! Maybe you could cover the cam in some sort of electrified cage to keep guest's hands and hats off ;) In any case thanks for the cam, it's really nice when not covered!
Hey My girlfriend and i will be there all next week. Dave this web cam is awsome. we have been checkin it out all week. we look forward to being in the picture on monday. :) Best regards. Twy Shaved head white dude with long gotee with a hot girlfriend. Look for us.
I've been viewing this site for a few years now and was able to have better panoramic and zoom controls towards Molokini and the rest of the ocean during the Humpback migration. Am I doing something wrong or have the controls been changed. Would be nice to get that occassional lucky shot of a breaching Humpback. I used to visit Kehei every year around Feb/Mar, during the peak of the Humpbacks but have been unable to for the past few years. Would be nice to see again.
Whenever there is a south swell the beach, according to the Hawaiian's, is taken out to sea to get washed! Then it returns slowly. A month or so ago, the beach was higher that I remember since buying at the Mana Kai in Feb. 2001. I am sure there is lots of it to the left still walkable...and it will be back in full force soon.

Well,I had the curtains cleaned last week and the cleaners bent the bracket holding the camera. Hence one can't pan up enough. Should be fixed this afternoon.

Are they out yet..? Those people in the picture have been sitting in the water for about a week now. They must be getting pretty wrinkled up by now...
New guests that will be there thru the 21st asked that we NOT turn the camera on.
Who is in control of the camera?
It has remaimained on the same scene for 10 minutes.
Will over week of Oct 8-15, will wave at all the viewers as I head out daily for golf and H2O activities. DH

Looks like someone bumped your webcam out of alignment again! When can you get it repointed?
By the way, if you want to check out other Maui Webcams, try this page at www.mauibeachguide.com .
i have found an useful tool about Web Camera Web Camera Security System, check it!

Is there a problem with the camera today? All I see if fuzzy stuff and water droplets...or is it just crummy outside today?
It rained last night. Unusual since this area only gets 4 inches per year. My property manager AAOceanfront will be cleaning the window shortly.
Anybody know where I can find a remote control windshield wiper and spray that will mount on a window?
I've been viewing this site for a few years now and was able to have better panoramic and zoom controls towards Molokini and the rest of the ocean during the Humpback migration.
